SAPTU
SAPTU was established in 1993 as a Labour Union under the auspices of the Labour Relations Act, Act 66 of 1995, for people operating in parastatal, tertiary and other related sectors. As an affiliate to Fedusa, the second largest trade union federation after Cosatu, we boast with Fedusa’s noted members of 560 000 (in 2009), a voice even in Parliament!
VISION AND MISSION: SAPTU ensures that all members feel safe and protected in their workplace environment without fear of intimidation or ridicule.
COMPETENCY
- In terms of the Labour Relations Act together with a properly negotiated Recognition Agreement we are competent to investigate any grievance of a member with his/her first line of reporting/supervisor to try and mediate in the matter
- We ensure that equality under the law is maintained in terms of Section 9 of the Constitution (Act 108 of 1996) and that fair labour practices are applied in the workplace in terms of Section 23 (1) of our Constitution.
- We also ensure that individual members are treated with respect and that they are protected against victimization by representing them at disciplinary hearings, task agreement discussions and exploratory talks.
- We level the play fields, by ensuring that the ‘Audi alteram partem’ rule (listen to the other party’s version) is adhered to diligently and consistently.
- We ensure that reasonability and fairness are applied consistently, whether it be during disciplinary proceedings or any other proceedings/exploratory talks. This includes procedural and substantive fairness.
- We negotiate for salary increases/adjustments and the general betterment of the members’ conditions of employment.
- We can represent our members at forums like the CCMA (Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration) at the Labour Court, other disciplinary proceedings and instituted investigations/exploratory talks.
- We empower our members by circulating informative directives and by training our shop stewards in the basic principles of applicable labour legislation.
