PRESS RELEASE: SAPTU welcomes National List of Occupations in High Demand

SAPTU supports the notion of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) to shine a light on occupations in the country which are in high demand, to guide jobseekers in finding available jobs.

The National List of Occupations in High Demand: 2020 was published in the Government Gazette, and consists of 345 of these occupations. This list refers to occupations in high demand and not scarce skills.

“The lack of appropriate skills constrains economic growth and development in South Africa,” says Adv Ben van der Walt, the general secretary of SAPTU. “It is imperative to identify skills needs in South Africa and ensure that education and training at all levels responds to the needs of the economy to assist in strong employment growth in future.”

The list will assist The Post-School Education and Training System by serving as a signpost for enrolment planning at universities, TVET colleges and other education and training institutions. It will assist in developing qualifications to respond to new and emerging occupation and skills needs. The most important benefit of knowing which occupations are in high demand to assist in the severe unemployment situation which young employment seekers face in South Africa.

“We want to encourage other employers and private institutions to use the List of Occupations in High Demand to support their own programmes and interventions,” he says.
